In April 2018, the San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission (SJRRC) awarded Siemens a contract to deliver four SC-44 Charger passenger diesels for its Altamont Corridor Express (ACE) commuter services, with planned extensions to Ceres, Modesto and Sacramento. The deal includes an option for another four locomotives.
Compared to the current SJRRC fleet of F40PH locomotives, the new 3280kW strong Chargers will offer increased fuel efficiency (+16%) and lower exhaust emissions thanks to its compliance with Tier 4 emission standards. Furthermore, the locomotives will be able to operate longer trains, increasing the maximum length from seven to ten coaches.
