CZ LOKO has out-shopped the EffiShunter 600 locomotive officially ordered by ČEPRO, a.s. in April 2018. The deal involved the modernization of oldie 740.891, which was tendered for in late-2017 and subsequently won by CZ LOKO in March 2018.
Originally, CEPRO ordered an EffiShunter 700 locomotive with a CAT C27 diesel engine on board instead of the less powerful EffiShunter 500 that houses a C18 engine. Meanwhile, the CZ LOKO product portfolio has shifted, replacing the 500 and 700 by an EffiShunter 600, which houses a Stage IIIb C18 engine delivering 563kW. The CEPRO loco is marketed as an EffiShunter 600, but still has a C27 engine. As a result, it is a little different to the standard EffiShunter 600.

Rynek-Kolejowy reports that the technical problems with the Pesa Gama DE locomotives of PKP IC continue to give its owner headaches. On 31 October 2018, merely half of the ten-strong fleet was in service.
The continuing issues with the Class SU160 diesels have forced PKP Intercity to replace the locos with slower Class SM42 diesel locomotives on the non-electrified parts of the route between Lublin naar Łuków. Between Łuków and Warsaw, electrics take over. Due to (delayed) construction works, the main route from Lublin to Warsaw via Deblin is not usable, creating further problems.
Current status of the Gama DE fleet:
- 3x engine damage
- 2x damage repair
- 5x usable
On Monday 5 November, in the lead up to Armistice Day, Freightliner, a subsidiary of Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W), named its recently re-liveried locomotive 66413 ‘Lest we forget’ in recognition of The Royal British Legion’s Thank You movement. The movement leads the nation in saying Thank You to the First World War generation who served, sacrificed and changed our world.
The loco naming ceremony took place at Freightliner’s maritime terminal in Southampton and was attended by more than 50 guests; including the Mayor of Southampton, industry representatives and several ex-military colleagues from both Freightliner and sister company Pentalver.
Following a remembrance service, the name plate, which also features The Royal British Legion’s Thank You logo, was unveiled by the winners of the staff loco naming competition.
“The Royal British Legion’s Thank You movement provides a perfect opportunity to recognise and remember the crucial role the rail industry had to play during World War 1,” said Adam Cunliffe, CCO of G&W’s UK/Europe companies. “Trains transported troops, rations, coal, water, horses and artillery across Britain and Europe in a way never previously seen. Over 100,000 railway workers enlisted when the war broke out. By the end of the war, tragically 20,000 had lost their lives. We should never forget the ultimate sacrifice they made.”
Catherine Davies, Head of Remembrance at The Royal British Legion, said, “We owe the World War 1 generation a huge debt of gratitude for helping to shape the world as we know it today. Not only the 1.2 million British and Commonwealth Armed Forces who lost their lives on the battlefield, but also those who kept the home front going. Our ‘Thank You’ movement recognises all who played their part at home. We are grateful to those who ran the railway in the First World War and who helped keep the country moving during such difficult times.”

Siemens adds another order for Charger locomotives to its order book. San Diego County's NCTD has approved the purchase of five new Charger locomotives at its June Board meeting. The locos are to replace five locomotives, which were originally built between 1975-1992 and which have have reached the end of their useful lifes.
“These new locomotives will help support our mission to provide reliable public transportation to passengers throughout San Diego County,” said Bill Horn, NCTD Board Member and County Supervisor for the 5th District. “In addition to increased reliability, they will also incorporate new technologies that release lower emissions and will improve air quality in the region.”
The new locomotives will allow NCTD to improve operational efficiency while contributing to local and state sustainability and air quality goals, with an estimated 90% reduction in emissions (compared to the existing engines) and 16% reduction in fuel consumption.
The NCTD order will be part of a framework contract from 2014, launched by the California, Illinois, Missouri, Michigan and Washington Departments of Transportation. This joint agreement does not only saves costs due to lowered procurement costs, but, additionally, the size of the procurement aids in the future acquisition of needed spare parts for continued operations.

In March 2014, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) became launching customer of the Charger by placing an order with Siemens in conjunction with the Departments of Transportation of Missouri, Michigan, California and Washington for 32 locomotives. The order included a framework contract for 225 additional locomotives. The locomotives will be used on Amtrak-run corridor services. Of the 32 locomotives, 6 were destined for the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).
In early November 2015, a call-off order was placed by Caltrans for an additional 14 Charger locomotives to serve the Pacific Surfliner Amtrak route along the Southern California coast from San Luis Obispo to San Diego via Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. Delivery of the 14 machines is expected between July 2018 and February 2019.
In 2016, another two options were firmed up. This brought the total number of locomotives on order for Caltrans to 22. Delivery of the two additional locomotives will directly follow deliveries of the second batch.
In 2017, the six Charger locomotives ordered in 2014 were delivered to the California Department of Transportation and subsequently entered service. In late-March 2018, the first two locos of the second batch (2107 and 2108) were released from the Siemens works in Sacramento, as seen in the video above. Locos 2109 and 2110 followed in late-April, as the video below shows.

In April 2018, two new EffiShunter 1000 diesel locomotives built by CZ LOKO could be seen in Italy. The locos, numbered 744 103-3 and 744 104-1, are destined to enter service for Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal (Mercitalia S&T), the company previously known as SerFer. The two are part of an order for five locos with an option for five more.
In April 2018, the San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission (SJRRC) awarded Siemens a contract to deliver four SC-44 Charger passenger diesels for its Altamont Corridor Express (ACE) commuter services, with planned extensions to Ceres, Modesto and Sacramento. The deal includes an option for another four locomotives.
Compared to the current SJRRC fleet of F40PH locomotives, the new 3280kW strong Chargers will offer increased fuel efficiency (+16%) and lower exhaust emissions thanks to its compliance with Tier 4 emission standards. Furthermore, the locomotives will be able to operate longer trains, increasing the maximum length from seven to ten coaches.

As 2017 neared its end, ČEPRO decided to launch a tender for the modernization of locomotive 740.891. In March 2018, the tender was won by CZ LOKO, which had offered its EffiShunter 700 modernization concept. On Wednesday, 18 April 2018, the contract was finalized at the CZ LOKO works in Jihlava.
The EffiShunter 700 is primarily designed for shunting at heavy industry sites, intermodal terminals and ports, as well as light mainline operations. It is a comprehensive modernization of CKD Class 740 or 742 shunting locomotives. The loco is equipped with a 709 kW CAT C27 diesel engine.
ČEPRO a.s. is active in the transportation, storage and sale of petroleum products. It also operates a network of its own petrol stations under the trade name EuroOil. The company operates a fleet of 11 locomotives of different types and performance categories.

At the Multimodal trade fair in Birmingham, Freightliner presented its new brand identity to the public for the very first time. The company states:
Following parent company Genesee & Wyoming’s acquisition of Pentalver Transport last year, the businesses’ commercial teams now serve customers across three core platforms of Rail, Road and Terminals. “With this in mind, it now makes sense to align the Freightliner brand with that of G&W, providing consistency across the three platforms,” said G&W UK/Europe Region CEO Gary Long.
The new Freightliner logo is consistent with that of Pentalver and more than 120 G&W freight railroads in North America, Australia and Europe. Freightliner will shortly commence rebranding its intermodal and bulk rail freight terminals throughout the UK as well as its Freightliner Road Services trucks whilst taking a phased approach with other assets, including locomotives and wagons.

Rail & Sea is not new when it comes to EuroRunner diesel locomotives. The company already had Beacon Rail (223-003) and SETG (ER 20-02) owned examples in operation in Croatie (and Slovenia). Now, the company has started operations with its first, self-owned loco: 223-007. The loco was previously owned by MRCE and was the last of its type in MRCE's fleet. All other ER20 locos were sold to different companies, with the majority having been sold to Beacon Rail.
ROG 47813 leads TPE-liveried 68019 and 68021 towards Dollands Moor in a second attempt to get the locos to the European mainland on 21 March 2018. Picture by Jack Meakin-Sawyer.
A month ago, we reported about Class 68 locomotives 68019 and 68021 being moved to the British entrance of the Channel Tunnel for further transfer to the VUZ Velim test ring in the Czech Republic:
"On March 6, Class 68 locos 68019 and 68021 were brought to the Dollands Moor Yard on the British side of the Channel Tunnel by the Rail Operations Group. Although further transfer through the tunnel did not go through (with the locos returning to the DRS depot at Crewe on the 9th), it shows that tests together with CAF Mark 5a stock at the Velim test ring are planned for the near future."
However, the move was not successful with the locos returning back to base from Dollands Moor fairly quickly. On March 21st, a second attempt was done with Rail Operations Group (ROG) bringing the locomotives to Dollands Moor, using Class 47 oldie 47813. The locos did make it to Frethun, on the French side of the tunnel, later on. Unfortunately, continuing issues regarding further transport through France resulted in the locomotives returning back to Dollands Moor.
Having a plan B in place, the locos were subsequently forwarded to Immingham for shipment to Cuxhaven, Germany, where they arrived on April 5th. From there, their journey to the Czech Republic will continue after they are put back on the rails from the transport trailers on which they arrived.

On 5 April 2017, CZ LOKO and SerFer signed an agreement for the delivery of five EffiShunter 1000 locomotives to the Italian operator with an option for a further five. In October 2017, CZ LOKO presented the first locomotive for SerFer at the Expo Ferroviaria in Milan. It concerned former demonstrator loco 744 101-7, which had been restyled from its previous CZ LOKO livery to the red and white SerFer colour scheme. In January 2018, this loco could be witnessed at the VUZ Velim test ring for dynamic trials (see picture above).
In the meantime, the other four locomotives have been taken in production by the Czech manufacturer too. Quite recently, the fourth locomotive of the batch could be witnessed in Česká Třebová: SerFer 744 104-1. The loco flanked the freshly delivered 753 609-7, which was delivered to Hungary's CER Cargo Holding on 28 March 2018.

Impression of the new SALi locomotives for Bolivian rail operator Empresa Ferroviaria Andina S.A. (FCA) by Stadler Rail Valencia.
A first for Stadler and a first for a European manufacturer since decades: an order for locomotives from Bolivia. Bolivian rail operator FCA (Empresa Ferroviaria Andina S.A.) has ordered three SALi locomotives, which will be produced at the Stadler works in Valencia, Spain.
SALi stands for South American Light Loco, a type specifically designed for the Latin American market. It features an ultra-lightweight design and will be able to cope with operating on metre-gauge lines that reach an altitude of 5,000 meters above sea level.
The locos will be especially equipped for freight traffic and will have a maximum speed of 100 km/h. The acoustic and heat-insulated driver cabs are to create comfortable working conditions for the drivers under the extreme temperature conditions that may be encountered.
SALi is specifically designed as a benchmark locomotive for the Bioceanic Corridor, linking the Southern Pacific and Southern Atlantic oceans by using the Bioceanic Rail Integration Corridor. This new corridor, which crosses Bolivia, will link the Peruvian port of Ilo with the port of Santos in Brazil
