In short

The very first representative of a range of customer specific, EuroRunner based locos, that also incorporates huge 6-axle versions with up to 3000kW power, is the ER20 series for Lithuanian State Railways, Lietuvos Geležinkeliai. LG ordered 34 machines with 2000kW power back in 2005.

The LG ER20 series debuted at the InnoTrans 2006 international railway fair in Berlin as a 1:20 scale model. Together with a wooden model of the future LE4700 series for the Portuguese Railways, representing the also debuting 2007 EuroSprinter platform, it was exhibited at the Siemens stand.

The initial order from 2005 also included an option for 10 additional engines. In October 2008 this option became a fixed order. Between May and September 2010, these additional units were shipped to Lithuania.

Delivery

The revised EuroRunner and EuroSprinter locos, introduced in 2007, have the same cabin module, which was developed to meet the latest European TSI regulations on crash impact and driver safety for locomotives. The EuroRunner body and frame design is also redesigned, resulting in a completely different appearance when comparing it with the conventional, compact 4-axled EuroRunner machines built up till then. Therefore we refer to the original EuroRunners as EuroRunner Classic and to the redesigned platform as EuroRunner 2007.

On 18 and 19 August 2007, the first huge red machine was transported from the factories in Munchen-Allach to the German harbor of Mukran. For this transport the machines temporarily got driving axles for 1435 track gauge, which were exchanged for its final axles for 1524 mm (the track gauge in Lithuania) in Mukran. From there the ER20 set sail for its Baltic home country.

On 05.10.2007 the ER20 001 was officially presented in Vilnius. In that same month also ER20 002 arrived. After a period of extensive trials, the first commercial services of these machines commenced in 2008.
