Home Siemens Charger California DOT [US] It is official: three new Charger orders for Siemens [Updated]

On November 6, Siemens announced that it had secured another three orders for its Charger passenger diesel locomotive. All three orders are call-offs from an existing framework agreement for up to 225 locomotives from 2014. In total, there are now 79 Charger locomotives on order.

Order 1 - Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT)
IDOT has called off a batch of 12 locomotives, on top of the 21 locomotives ordered in March 2014.

Order 2 - California Department of Transportation (Caltrans)
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) ordered 14 locomotives to serve the Pacific Surfliner Amtrak route along the Southern California coast from San Luis Obispo to San Diego via Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. These 14 locomotives increase the total number of Chargers on order from Siemens to 20.

Order 3 - Maryland Transit Administration (MTA)
We already reported about MTA's decision to order Charger locomotives from Siemens in September, but it is now official. Last August's intention to buy eight Charger locomotives is now officially confirmed by Siemens. The locomotives are to be delivered in 2017 and will replace older passenger diesels locomotives on MARC (Maryland Area Regional Commuter) passenger services.
