MTCRL 8000

Home Siemens EuroRunner Classic MTCRL

In short

The Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC) from Hong Kong ordered five EuroRunners back in 2003 for freight services. This order was easily completed by Siemens as the manufacturer was already working on the ÖBB order for 100 EuroRunners. Technically the KCRC locos are closely related to their Austrian counterparts, but there are some differences. The locos are fitted with knuckle couplers, have additional small grilles on the front and are fitted with a radio control system. The locos are designated as the 8000 series.

In 2004 KCRC merged with MTRCL for efficiency reasons. From that point on all services were under the MTCRL flag. Unfortunately, rail freight volumes also dropped in the following years. Mainly because the infrastructure at Chinese ports started to get better and freight operators were now using these ports as an alternative. With freight transport by rail not being viable anymore, it was decided to end all freight operations in 2010. Nowadays the MTRCL 8000 series are in use for passenger services.
